Windows 10 October 2018 Update hits the market

We’re very close to seeing how Windows 10 October 2018 Update hits the market. It is the umpteenth version of Windows of which we already know almost all its features and news. Improvements that have caused us to look back to see how Windows has evolved since its inception.

But in this review we are not going to talk about dates, about improvements that have come with each version, but about an iconic aspect that seems to remain unchanged until we look to see how it has changed. We talk about the Windows “logo” and its evolution over the years in the different versions.

The look of Windows logos has grown with us. It has evolved adapting to the times that run at all times and reflecting the design trends that have been imposed. Let’s see how they have evolved by abusing nostalgia a bit.

Windows 10 October 2018 Update

As we have changed

Windows

And we start with November 20, 1985, when Microsoft released Microsoft Windows 1.0. The grandfather of everything we have now. And it came with a logo that showed the 4 panels but all in one color. Similar to what we see today.

Windows 1

Windows 3.0 and its revisions arrived from May 1990 and the logo changes completely. The same color for the four windows of the logo is replaced by the colors red, green, blue and yellow that were common from that moment. In addition, it was completed with a curved window that in the left area offered a kind of gradient.

Windows

Windows 95 did not change the aesthetic introduced. The window became slanted and the colors red, green, blue and yellow were now more vivid. Few other changes except the typeface, now with a mix of normal and bold letters.

Windows 95

We then find a version of what for many is the best Windows ever. In Windows XP we saw the side gradient of the window disappear, how the black edges disappeared and the highlights reached the logo. In addition, the color reached the typography to highlight the name, “XP”.

IN ENGADGET WINDOWS

Windows 10 October 2018 Update is coming: these are the main news that it holds for your computer. Then came Windows Vista in 2006, a cursed version for many (I liked it). The Aero interface that gave so much headache was denoted even the logo, now embedded in more brightness and perhaps more loading than that offered with Windows XP.

View

After that misstep, Windows 7 arrived in 2009, whose logo tried to go back to the origins of Windows XP. A simple image, without borders, less loaded and with more bright and clear colors. With Windows 7 we last saw the colors red, green, blue and yellow.

We thus arrived at Windows 8, a logo that lost the color variety in what seemed to be a return to the first Windows image represented by the simplicity of a single color, again in blue. In addition, the window lost its curves and now appeared in perspective with very sharp straight lines.

Windows

Finally, it’s time to talk about Windows 10 in its different versions. A Windows image according to the times, evolution of the reboot in design that came with Windows 8. Now the letters arrive at the window in white on a blue background, with the same straight lines and clear letters.

Windows version on your PC – How to find out? Easy Steps

The Windows version operating system accounts for at least 36% of the total market and is the second most popular operating system in the world… The first place was taken by Android, created by Google, which is present in the vast majority of smartphones used by people. The reason for this is the incredible turnover of devices based on it and their popularity associated with affordability and good performance.

Windows is the first choice for all novice users looking to enter the computing world. One of the reasons is its availability. Since Apple products – MacOS are far from affordable for everyone, and Linux is perceived as a more complex system to understand, Windows accordingly comes out ahead. It should be noted that recently, Microsoft’s operating system has started to face competition from Chrome OS . At least this applies to the education sector.

In any case, even after many years of the existence of the operating system, users may wonder “what version of Windows am I using?”

Knowing the version of your system is very important. This is especially true when it is necessary to check the compatibility of the installed software for applications and drivers. It should be remembered that installing the wrong drivers can lead not only to the failure of some system elements, but also to their damage.

Which version of Windows am I using?

Windows version

The first and, at the same time, the easiest way is to check the properties of the computer.

In order to find out the version of the operating system, you need to do just a couple of simple steps: right-click on the My Computer icon and go to Properties . This window will show the Windows version and edition. You can find a lot of interesting information about your computer here:

  • Processor name.
  • Installed memory (RAM).
  • System bit depth (32-bit or 64-bit).
  • User name and workgroup.

Using the Windows Settings menu.

With the release of Windows 11, Microsoft added another place to take a closer look at your system.

For more information about your computer and the operating system installed on it, open the Settings menu and go to System> System Information . In this window, you will see information about the version of Windows 11, its build number and the date the last update was installed.

Using build number 17134 indicates that you are using the April 2018 update.

Using the System Information application to determine the OS version.

As you may recall, WIndows comes with a built-in application called System Information , which allows you to examine in detail all the information about your PC with additional detail. You can find the application in a Windows search engine by entering its name in the dialog box below.

By running this application, you will read detailed information about the computer that no other software will give.

Find out your Windows Ver. using CMD.

You can use the command line to determine the version of the operating system. To do this, use the winver command .

A small window will appear in front of you, displaying the Windows version and its build number. It should be said that the information obtained by this method will not be as complete as in the case of the previous methods.

If you do not want to use the command line, simply write the command winver in the Start menu dialog box and click on the found utility.

What’s my system bit rate? 32-bit or 64-bit?

To do this, we need to return to the first described method of checking the Windows version. Go to the Properties of the My Computer icon and the system capacity will be displayed in the window that appears.

So, you have determined the version and bitness of the system. However, there are other interesting pieces of information that you might want to know.

Windows 11 release date

Many users would be interested to know when their operating system was released. Microsoft has done a lot of work from its early versions of Windows to modern Windows 11, calling it the latest. Now the company is busy updating the existing OS and creating new additions to it.

Download Windows 11

Windows 11 launch on end of 2021.

When was the last update released?

In Aug 2020, the last Windows update was released.

Is Windows 11 Free?

Gradually, the answer began to approach negative. Initially, Windows 11 was offered as a free system for all users with a licensed version of Windows 10, 7, 8, and 8.1 installed.

Microsoft literally forced everyone to upgrade to Windows 11. Some users may even remember a separate message in the corner of the screen asking them to update their OS.

How much does Windows 11 cost?

If you missed out on the free system upgrade, you can still purchase a licensed version for one PC at $ 119.99 and Windows Pro for $ 199. Plus, Windows 11 often comes with many laptops, making it cheaper.

What about updates?

After installing a licensed version of Windows 11 on a computer, subsequent updates will be downloaded for free. To date, Microsoft has released 5 full-fledged updates, including the April 2018 one. The next major update will be released later this year, called Redstone .

How do I boot Windows 11?

If you’ve already installed Windows 11, then the latest update is almost certainly already present in it. If the automatic download did not occur, visit the Microsoft website and click the Update Now button .

You can install the system using a boot disk or a Windows 7 or 8 product key. If the free upgrade period has not yet expired.

It is known that free upgrades from previous OS versions still work if you have a license key.

Just in case, if you need to recover information from a hard drive from a Windows operating system, Starus Recovery tools will help you . You can download and try programs for recovering deleted data completely free of charge!

Installing Windows 11 from a Bootable USB flash drive

Installing Windows 11 from a Bootable USB flash drive: This step-by-step guide details how to install Windows 11 from a USB stick to your computer or laptop. The manual will also work in cases where a clean installation of the OS is performed from a DVD, there will be no fundamental differences. Also, at the end of the article there is a video about installing Windows 11, by watching which some steps can be better understood. Also available as a separate material: Installing Windows 11 on a Mac.

Windows 11

As of 2020, downloading Windows 11 installation using the methods described below downloads Windows 11. If you have already installed licensed Windows 11 on your computer or laptop, obtained in any way, you do not need to enter the product key during installation. For more information about activation features, see the article: Activating Windows 11 (you can work without activation, see Using Windows 11 without activation). If you only need to fix problems with the installed OS, while it starts up, you can use an easier method: How to reset Windows 11 to factory settings or automatically reinstall the OS.

Creating a bootable device for installation

Preparing for installation, booting a computer or laptop from a USB flash drive

Before you start installing the system, take care of your personal important data (including from the desktop). Ideally, they should be saved to an external drive, a separate hard drive on your computer, or to “D drive” – a separate partition on your hard drive if available.

windows 11 bootable

Another step before proceeding with the installation is to put the boot from a USB flash drive or disk into the BIOS (UEFI) of a computer or laptop. To do this, restart the computer (it is better to restart, and not turn off-on, since the Windows fast boot functions in the second case may prevent you from performing the necessary actions) and:

  • Or go to BIOS (UEFI) and install the installation drive first in the list of boot devices. Logging into BIOS is usually done by pressing Del (on stationary computers) or F2 (on laptops) before the operating system starts loading. More details – How to put a boot from a USB flash drive in BIOS.
  • Or use the Boot Menu (this is preferable and more convenient) – a special menu from which you can choose which drive to boot from this time, is also called by a special key after turning on the computer. More details – How to enter the Boot Menu.

After booting from the Windows 11 distribution kit, you will see the message “Press any key to boot from CD ort DVD” (does not always appear) on a black screen. Press any key and wait for the installer to start. Possible problem at this stage and its solution: BIOS / UEFI does not see the Windows 11 bootable USB flash drive.

The process of installing Windows 11 on a computer or laptop

  1. On the first screen of the installer, you will be asked to select the language, time format and keyboard input method – you can leave the default values, Russian.
  2. The next window is the “Install” button, which should be clicked to continue, as well as the “System Restore” item below, which will not be considered in this article, but is very useful in some situations.
  3. You will be taken to the window for entering a product key to activate Windows 11. In most cases, except when you purchased a product key separately, just click “I do not have a product key.” Activation will occur automatically after connecting to the Internet, if previously licensed Windows 11 was installed on this computer or laptop. Additional options for actions and when to apply them are described in the “Additional information” section at the end of the manual.
  4. The next step (it may not appear if the edition was identified by a key, including from UEFI) – select the edition of Windows 11 to install. Choose the option that was previously installed (if activation of the pinned digital license is required).
  5. Read the terms of the license agreement and accept them. Once done, click the “Next” button.
  6. One of the most important points is the choice of the type of Windows 11 installation. There are two options: Update (it is possible to perform only if a new system is installed, when the old OS version is installed on the disk) – in this case, all parameters, programs, files of the previous installed system are saved, and the old system itself is saved to the Windows.old folder (but this option is not always possible to run). That is, this process is similar to a simple update, it will not be considered here. Custom installation – this item allows you to perform a clean installation without saving (or partially saving) user files, and during installation, you can partition disks, format them, thereby clearing the computer from the files of the previous Windows. It is this method that will be described.
  7. After specifying a custom installation, you will be taken to the window for selecting a disk partition for installation (possible installation errors at this stage are described below). At the same time, if this is not a new hard drive or SSD, you will see a much larger number of partitions than you saw in Explorer before, an example is shown in the screenshot. I will try to explain the options for action (also in the video at the end of the instructions, I show and tell in detail what and how you can do in this window).
  • If your computer has multiple physical disks, they will appear as Disk 0, Disk 1 and beyond. Everyone can have multiple sections. Regardless of which drive you install Windows 11 to, Disk 0 will be used to write system files, hidden partitions and boot loader. Therefore, ideally, install the OS on Disk 0 (otherwise, if this disk is turned off, the system on another disk will not start). If, for example, you purchased a new SSD and it is displayed as Disk 1, you can try to find a separate item in the BIOS to indicate the order of hard drives and put SSD in the first place, or change the SATA cables (if this interface is used) between the two drives, so that the desired drive appears in the installer as Drive 0.
  • If you had Windows preinstalled by the manufacturer, then in addition to the system partitions on Disk 0 (their number and sizes may vary 110, 300, 450 MB), you will see another (usually) 11-20 gigabyte partition. I do not recommend touching it in any way, as it contains a system recovery image that allows you to quickly return your computer or laptop to its factory state when the need arises. Also, do not modify system-reserved partitions (unless you decide to completely wipe the hard drive).
  • As a rule, during a clean installation of the system, it is placed on the partition corresponding to the C drive, with its formatting (or deletion). To do this, select this section (you can determine it by its size), click “Format”. And after that, having selected it, click “Next” to continue installing Windows 11. If messages appear about the inability to install to this section, click on the message to get information about the error (they are discussed later in the instructions). Data on other partitions and disks will not be affected. If you had Windows 7 or XP installed on your computer before installing Windows 11, it is more reliable to delete the partition (but not format it),
  • If you skip formatting or uninstallation and select a partition for installation on which the OS is already installed, then the previous Windows installation will be placed in the Windows.old folder, and your files on the C drive will not be affected (but there will be a lot of junk on the hard drive).
  • Best practice: if there is nothing important on your system disk (Disk 0), you can completely delete all partitions of this disk one at a time, select a single unallocated space on Disk 0 and click the “Next” button this will avoid almost any errors and problems. You can create disk D (if required) after installing the system.
  • If the previous system is installed on partition or drive C, and to install Windows 11 you choose another partition or disk, then as a result, you will have two operating systems installed on your computer at the same time with the choice of the one you need when you boot your computer.

Note: if, when you select a partition on a disk, you see a message that it is impossible to install Windows 11 on this partition, click on this text, and then, depending on what the full text of the error will be, use the following instructions: The disk has a GPT partition style when installation, The selected disk has a MBR partition table, on EFI systems Windows can only be installed to a GPT disk,  We were unable to create a new or find an existing partition when installing Windows 11

  • After choosing your variant of the partition for installation, click the “Next” button. Copying Windows 11 files to your computer begins.
  • After the reboot, you will not need to take any action for some time – “Preparation”, “Component configuration” will take place. This may cause the computer to restart and sometimes freeze with a black or blue screen. In this case, just wait, this is a normal process – sometimes it takes hours. Important: if after a reboot you start the Windows 11 setup program again, just put the boot from the hard drive or SSD in BIOS or Windows Boot Manager in UEFI, or disconnect the USB flash drive, or do not press any key when prompted to do so.
  • The next step is to configure the basic parameters of the system. The first point is the choice of the region.
  • The second step is to confirm that the keyboard layout is correct.
  • The installer then prompts you to add additional keyboard layouts. If you do not require input options other than Russian and English, skip this step (English is present by default).
  • If you have active network adapters, you will be prompted to connect to the Internet. You can do this, especially if you plan to use a Microsoft account. If you need a local account, I would recommend not to connect to the network until the installation of Windows 11. To do this, click on the item “I do not have Internet” and “Continue limited installation” in the next window.
  • If you have an Internet connection, you will be offered two options for setting up Windows 11 – for personal use or for an organization (use this option only if you need to connect your computer to a work network, domain and Windows servers in your organization). Usually you should choose the option for personal use.
  • The next step of the installation is to set up a Windows 11 account. If you have an active Internet connection, you are prompted to set up a Microsoft account or enter an existing one. You can click “Offline Account” at the bottom left to create a local account. If there is no Internet connection, a local account is created. When installing the latest Windows 11 versions, after entering your username and password, you will also need to ask security questions to recover your password if it is lost.
  • When using a Microsoft account, you’ll see a prompt to use a PIN to sign in. You will also be prompted to set up OneDrive.
  • If you select Offline account, you will be prompted again about the benefits of using a Microsoft account (opt out) and then asked to enter your computer username. Do not enter the name Administrator, as it is assigned to a hidden system account. Any user you create with any name will be a Windows 11 administrator anyway.
  • Enter a password for your account, confirm it, and then select and provide answers to security questions to be used in case you forget your password.
  • You will be prompted to enable Windows 11 Activity Log – a new feature that stores a history of programs, documents, sites used, and can be accessed from other devices with the same Microsoft account. Enable or disable – at your discretion.
  • And the final step of the setup is to configure Windows 11 privacy settings, which include location data transmission, speech recognition, diagnostic data transmission, and the creation of your advertising profile. Read carefully and disable what you don’t need. I turn off all items, but if you have a laptop or tablet, you can recommend leaving the Location and Find device enabled, this can help you find it in case of loss.
  • Following this, the last stage will begin – setting up and installing standard applications, preparing Windows 11 for launch, on the screen it will look like the inscription: “This may take several minutes.” In fact, it can take minutes or even hours, especially on “weak” computers, you should not forcefully shut down or restart it at this time.
  • And finally, you will see the Windows 11 desktop – the system is installed successfully, you can start setting up and studying it.

Windows 11 Update and Installation

Windows 11 Update and Installation: Many are wondering how to enable updates on Windows 11? You’d better tell me how to get rid of them. Windows systems have moved to the tenth level to get rid of all the hassle of the user. You can prohibit updating only by prohibiting the Microsoft DNS server. Physically disconnecting from the network is the only available way to prevent automatic updates in Windows 11. There is a special utility that hides some packages, which postpones their inclining, but not the fact that the utility affects those options that Microsoft deems important. Update canter not working? Try to enable Internet access for this personal computer. According to some sources, the installation of Windows 11 updates cannot be interrupted even by the outbreak of World War III. Everything will be installed strictly on schedule.

windows 11 update

Windows 11 Check for updates

Updates are automatically installed in Windows 11. Customization is only marginally process related. For example: We go into the settings through the Start menu. Update Centre in Windows Settings. Click on the button and Check for Updates. We go into additional parameters and Selecting additional parameters. Now we will postpone updates, close the window, and our computer is no longer updated. It was not there. The transcript says that only a few of them won’t install. These are most likely important to us. And Microsoft will deliver its own anyway. But maybe then we will choose how and when?

Choosing the method and time of Windows 11 updates

It turns out that Microsoft, to offload its servers, has organized something that resembles a torrent network, where each host that receives the information can distribute pieces of the received data. Of course, it is difficult to find a way to update such a herd of personal computers, so the adoption of tracker technology has allowed us to see a new, opened horizon, wider than the previous one. But not for us. Our resources will now work for upgrading the software of other machines. You see that it is impossible to disable the process through the update centre. But there is also a separate application available on the Microsoft website. There is a link at the bottom where this program is available.

Problem management package

This program, like the above option, enables or disables some downloads. First, the application needs to find out which packages are available, and then the user can see what exactly can be hidden for now. Again, Microsoft does not provide critical download management.

What you need to update

Make sure the computer has a network connection. However, it is available since this article is available in a browser. The second item is the activation of the equipment. You need to make sure that the copy of Windows is genuine. To do this, look at the sticker located at the bottom of the System Properties window.

Windows 11 System authenticity

Sometimes there may be an inscription. Something likes “choose genuine software” and so on. This means that the data collection located on the server now contains information about our equipment. Now is the time to open Windows Update 11. The update must be allowed in Group Policy by the system administrator.

My copy is genuine, but updates won’t start

From time to time the Microsoft License Server crashes. Take comfort in the fact that in the days of Windows 7 this happened all the time. At least a couple of times a year. Version 11is not affected by this disease. Therefore, setup is simplified. But if the computer refuses to install packages, then the following options are possible. Call technical support, tell about the situation. Ask about problems with verifying the authenticity of your copy of Windows. There are no updates at all on the server. There is nothing to bet. Updates are hidden by the utility mentioned above. There is a ban in group policies. Microsoft and its server that hosts the legal copy data collection do not update counterfeit versions of the operating system. At our enterprises, pirated software is used from time to time, so it is not surprising that Western companies began to take some measures in this regard.

Windows 11 update Direct way to upgrade

Those who carefully looked at the pictures above have already seen the button where it is written about checking for updates. After pressing it, the changes will be enabled automatically, no configuration is required. In addition, some of them can be removed from the update history. But not all of them.

Update log Old update centre

In Windows 10, it was possible to flexibly manage the installation of updates, and the corporation did not like this, therefore, it is no longer possible to open the center. We would venture to suggest that someone discovered new ways of fraud that were noticed by the technical staff of the corporation. Now the installation is carried out with one click without the possibility of choosing any options. The verification process is as follows.

Windows 11 Search for updates on the web

The system is looking for something on the network, but the list of available packages no longer opens. There is no way to decide what to put and what to postpone.

Windows 11 Command line

The Microsoft server stores information about who has and what updates cost. Therefore, some of them may not open on the local machine. The command line comes to the rescue. Everything is run by the wuauclt directive. Many people ask if this works at all under Windows 11. Because you type from the command line and nothing happens.

Question about wuauclt directive

Despite the assurances of some old-timers of the forum, many argue that the team is working in a strange way. It seems that she writes “our wishes” to the Microsoft servers, which are executed as soon as free time appears. Many argue that the effect occurs after a few hours. Thus, the command line cannot be considered the best way to resolve the issue. Updates will not open immediately, and you cannot quickly reset their list. In addition, many people use scripts in various programming languages for the same actions.
