Windows 10: Show and hide search bar and Cortona

Windows 10 offers a search field in the lower left of the taskbar next to the Windows logo. Installed programs, apps and system settings can be searched for. This field is actually superfluous. Because if you click on the Windows logo instead of in this search field, you can also start a search. You just have to start typing and the search box will appear automatically. So if you do not want to use the already limited space in the taskbar for the search field, the search can be replaced by a small magnifying glass symbol or hidden entirely via the context menu of the taskbar.

Replace the search bar in Windows 10 with a magnifying glass icon

  1. Right-click anywhere on the taskbar.
  2. Now select “Search -> Show search symbol”.

Completely hide the search bar in Windows 10

  1. Right-click in the search field.
  2. Select “Search” and then “Hidden”.

Cortana / Search bar should always remain dark when using system-wide dark mode, like the address bar of Edge in dark theme : Windows10

Important: If the entry “Search -> Show search field” is missing in the context menu of the taskbar, this is due to the icon size. Because the size of the icons in the taskbar can be changed from the standard size to a small size. If this is the case for you, Windows refuses to display the search field and also makes the associated menu command disappear. Change the icon size in the properties menu of the taskbar. To do this, click with the right mouse button on the taskbar and uncheck “Properties -> Use small buttons on the taskbar”. Then confirm this with “OK”. The “Show search field” command appears below, like the one in the context menu of the taskbar under “Search”.

In the event that the entry “Search” does not appear in the context menu at all, Cortana activated. This is the Windows 10 voice assistant, which can also search for programs and other things. However, if you prefer not to speak to your PC, deactivate Cortana as follows: Left-click the Windows logo and type in any letter. Instead of the start menu, the Cortana search appears, which you can deactivate by clicking on the gear symbol and “Off”.

Cortana is the name of Microsoft’s voice assistant, which is prominently placed in the taskbar in Windows 10. We’ll show you how to minimize or remove the Cortana search box.

Whether Siri, OK Google or Cortana – voice assistants are very much in fashion right now. No wonder, as they are functionally no longer comparable with what they were able to do when they were introduced. The rapid further development and the resulting new possibilities for voice control of entire systems is fascinating for many users. But there are also skeptics who see data protection guidelines violated by voice assistants and therefore avoid them.

Under  Windows 10 Cortana is preinstalled – and at a position that many users a headache. If you look to the left of the Windows Start button, you will see a large white search field behind which Cortana’s artificial intelligence is hidden. The advantage: If you don’t know what to do next, you can ask the virtual assistant for advice or simply type a question into the search field. However, users who are familiar with Windows or do not want to use Cortana will steal a lot of space in the taskbar through the search field, for example for program shortcuts. There is new windows coming all through.

How to hide Cortana from the taskbar or minimize the search field to icon size

Hide Cortana from the taskbar

You can create more space for your individual taskbar by completely hiding the Cortana search field. To do this, right-click on your taskbar. A dialog window opens, go to the “Cortana” tab. In another sub-tab, you can remove the search field from the taskbar by clicking on “Hide”.

If you don’t want to do without Cortana entirely, but still want to create more space in the taskbar for further program links, simply select “Show Cortana Icon”. Now the voice assistant no longer appears as a search bar, but as a circular symbol, right next to the start button.

It is high time to switch to the current version of the Microsoft operating system.  Some Websites offers Windows 10 Home and  Windows 10 Professional at unbeatable prices and for direct download. Not sure which Windows 10 version is right for you? Then take a look at our large Windows 10 Home vs. Pro comparison.

Windows 10: With these 6 tips, your private data is safe

Tip 1: set general data protection

Windows 10 is inherently, with the standard settings, an inquisitive operating system that grants itself a lot of rights and collects a lot of user data. Usually this is not a problem, because Windows uses this data to customize the operating system. However, you can configure all the settings in Windows 10 for general data protection according to your wishes and switch them off or adjust them accordingly.

To do so by pressing the Windows Tas-th and i the settings and then select data protection from. You will see the left sub-items as Kame-ra or micro-fon , you can click individually to the rights of use for Microsoft with the slider off.

Example: Under the item camera you find the point Apps to use my camera Eger-ben . Here you can choose between On and Off or grant specific access to individual apps. If you generally for a decision, you also grant access to the Windows 10 use. If you switch off the function completely, it can happen that certain functions of Windows 10 can only be used to a limited extent or not at all, for example a Skype video call. As a user, you have to weigh up whether security or convenience is more important to you.

Windows 10: With these 6 tips, your private data is safe

Tip 2: switch off Cortana

The Cortana virtual assistant is designed to help find a solution quickly to many questions and problems. She understands both typed questions and, if a microphone is connected, spoken questions. For Cortana to work properly, however, you need to give Cortana extensive access to your behavior, contacts, and more.

If you do not want that, you can also switch Cortana off. To do so again in the gen A-stel-lun . Under voice recognition, hands-free and one-ga-be can park Cortana. All you have to do is set the slide switch to Off . To prevent all Cortana data collections, you should go to the Bing website under Manage cloud information in the same menu and go to Settings. Here you can delete the personal data already collected.

Tip 3: configure Microsoft Browser Edge

Microsoft’s new browser Edge works closely with the company’s own search engine Bing and the news service MSN – also a Microsoft product. As a result, user behavior is analyzed, the location is transmitted and every page visited is transmitted directly to Microsoft. If you do not want that, you can configure the Microsoft Edge browser accordingly.

To change the settings, click the icon with the three dots in the upper right corner of the Edge browser window. Now open the menu A-stel-lun-gen and then open it with new tabs . Here you select Empty Be th out, hide suggested MSN content. Under Advanced A-stel-lun-gen you will also find the sliders search suggestions when entering View, page forecast ver-wen-to and my PC with SmartScreen for malicious websites and downloads Shakers-zen . If you set this to OffEdge is decidedly less curious and no longer forwards data on your browsing behavior. Here you can also switch off Cortana separately for Bing.

Tip 4: turn off suggestions from Windows 10

If you are logged on to Windows 10 with a Microsoft account – and most users are the – makes your operating system each time the computer offers, which apps interesting or useful ten-could be for you . For these tips, the operating system collects data about which apps and programs are on the computer and have been downloaded. The use of certain programs and apps is also recorded. You do not want that Microsoft collects this information, go to the A-stel-lun-gen and there in the menu Per-so-na-li-she-tionto deactivate the function for the lock screen and the start menu. And the tips – and the associated data transfer – are history. If you want to use this service, there is no alternative to the associated data transfer.

Tip 5: slow down curious apps

Many apps require access to your data in order for them to work at all. Windows 10 collects this information and makes it available to the apps by default. For example, about the location of the user, his surfing behavior on the Internet and much more. This can help the app do its job well, but some personal information is also used.

Data collection can be on the menu one-stel-lun-gen under protection data unwind. Simply change the data protection option under the data protection option , set all sliders to Off and the curiosity of the apps is over. However, if you want or even have to allow certain apps or programs to use certain data in order for them to work, you can do this yourself in the settings of the relevant apps. This gives you better control over which applications you allow access to your data – and which not.

Tip 6: Use OneDrive with a password

Windows provides every user with 5 GB of free space on the OneDrive online hard drive by default. Microsoft reserves the right to scan photo files. This is justified with the search for illegal content. Going OneDrive without that Microsoft sees your images, there is only one option: to protect the images in a separate encrypted container that you hen ver-se-with a password . You can put several images in a container and then encrypt it with a password.

Explorer in Windows 10 can do that

Windows Explorer serves as the standard file manager for most users. As a Windows shell, it is also responsible for the desktop and the taskbar. It shows a two-part window: with a tree view on the left (“navigation area”), folders and files or drives and network addresses appear on the right.

Microsoft has freshened up the look of every version of Windows, and new features have been added. For example, in Windows 8 there is a Microsoft Office-style ribbon. The menu ribbon is also included in Windows 10, but the “libraries” introduced with Windows 7 now only appear under “This PC”. In addition, Microsoft now officially calls the program “File Explorer”. In this article we will simply use “Explorer”, not to be confused with the “Internet Explorer” browser.

Since the technical substructure of the Explorer has hardly changed, all the tips and tools that we present here work under Windows 7, 8.1 and 10. We also show alternative programs with which you can do some tasks better than with Explorer.

Explorer in Windows 10 can do that

1. Useful presets for Windows Explorer

By default, Windows Explorer does not display file name extensions. With this view setting, however, a file named “Invoice.pdf” could actually be called “Invoice.pdf.exe”. For security reasons, you should change the display. You can then immediately see whether malware is trying to camouflage itself. In Windows 7, go to “Tools -> Folder Options” in the menu. Windows 8.1 or 10 users activate “View” in the ribbon and click on “Options”. In the “Folder Options” window, switch to the “View” tab and uncheck “Hide extensions for known files”. You can also take the opportunity to remove the check mark in front of “Hide protected system files (recommended)” and select “Hidden files and folders” under “Hidden files and folders”. Select Show folders and drives”. Only then will you really see all the elements of the file system.

Additional settings can be found on the “General” tab of the “Folder Options” window. In Windows 7 and 8.1, under “Navigation Area” you determine what is to be seen in the left part of the Explorer window. In Windows 10, you can access these settings via the menu ribbon “View -> Navigation Area”. If “Show all folders” is checked, “Control Panel”, your own profile directory and folder on the desktop will also appear in the navigation area. This enables faster access to the elements mentioned, but reduces the clarity.

2. Adjust or standardize folder views

Windows Explorer displays the elements of the file system differently depending on the content. For example, if the Explorer detects image files in a folder, it automatically selects the “Large icons” view with preview images. For folders with any files, the default view is “Details”. The columns displayed also vary depending on the content. In the case of picture folders, the “Markers” column is added in the detailed view, and for audio files, information about the file such as “Track number”, “Title” and “Album” is added.

Folder Options: On the View tab determine which elements the Explorer displays.  For more security you should? Hide extensions for known file types?  Deactivate.

Folder Options: On the View tab determine which elements the Explorer displays. For more security you should? Hide extensions for known file types? Deactivate.

You determine how the Explorer displays a folder via the “View” menu or, in Windows 8.1 and 10, via the “View” tab in the menu ribbon. Settings such as “Details” or “Small symbols” as well as the options under “Sort by”, “Group by”, “Add columns” and also the column width are individually saved by the Explorer only for the current folder. Subfolders are not affected and keep their original settings. To change this, you can go to “Properties” in the context menu of a folder and then to the “Customize” tab. Place a check mark in front of “Use template for all subfolders” and click on the “OK” button.

On the “Customize” tab, under “Optimize this folder for:” you can see the folder type that Windows set automatically. If desired, you can also set a different type here.

If the settings changed for a folder should apply to all folders of the same type, open the “Folder Options” window as described in point 1. Go to the “View” tab and click “Apply to folder”. You can return to the standard settings at any time by clicking on “Reset folder”.

3. Quickly access folders using variables

Folder display: In the properties of a folder, you can adjust the folder type that determines the display, such as? Details?  Or? Big symbols?  The settings can also be used for subfolders.

Folder display: In the properties of a folder, you can adjust the folder type that determines the display, such as? Details? Or? Big symbols? The settings can also be used for subfolders.

The address bar of Windows Explorer always shows the path of the folder in which you are currently located. If you click in the bar you will see the full and actual path. Instead of “This PC> Documents”, for example, “C: \ Users \ username \ Documents” appears. Otherwise the Explorer translates some folder names into the respective language. The profile folder is always called “C: \ Users” under Windows 8.1 and 10. A German-language Windows translates this as “User”, an English one shows “Users” and a Spanish “Usuarios”.

However, variables that Windows automatically sets and uses internally are generally valid for all languages. Type% ProgramFiles% into the address bar and confirm with the Enter key. You will then go to “This PC> Local Disk (C :)> Programs” (“C: \ Program Files”). To call up “C: \ Users \ username \ AppData \ Roaming” just enter% AppData%. Here are the configuration directories of many programs, for example Mozilla Firefox and Libre Office, of which you should make backup copies from time to time.

Windows 10, 8.1, 7 or earlier versions, Mac OS or Linux

Regardless of our recommendations, we install on any computer any operating system indicated by the client, Windows 10, Windows 8.1, Windows 7, any Linux distribution or even without an operating system.

Windows 10 is an operating system specially developed for mobiles and tablets that also works on personal or desktop computers. It is entirely based on the model of what are known as apps (simple and limited applications for phones and tablets) and in the cloud. It is an operating system comparable to Google Android or Apple iOS (the operating system of Apple iPhone and iPad phones and tablets) , but it is not comparable to Windows 7 or earlier versions, Mac OS or Linux which are operating systems for personal computers or desktop.

Being an operating system for mobiles and tablets, it obviously has much fewer options and features than an operating system for personal or desktop computers such as Windows 7 and earlier versions of Windows, Linux or Mac OS. They have removed a ton of functionality, options, and features. Also everything is less configurable and customizable. In general, all the options that were in the control panel are much cut.

Microsoft also takes control of the operating system and there are many options that Microsoft does not allow to change, default applications already installed that cannot be uninstalled and locked system folders that are impossible to access and options that Microsoft does not allow to change. Updates are now automatic and mandatory. You cannot choose the ones you want nor can they be disabled. Microsoft always automatically installs all of them and there is no option or control to change this. And this happens with many other options of the operating system.

Windows 10

Like Windows 8.x, it still lacks the start menu, instead they have limited themselves to putting the Windows 8.x or Windows Phone start screen in a small size which is not comparable to the famous start menu we know and the that we are used to and to which they have added advertising that Microsoft calls “recommendations”. This home screen continues to have many limitations and hardly any customization options. All the searches that are made on this home screen, perform searches both on the computer’s storage units and on the Internet through Microsoft’s Bing search engine, an option that, as in all this operating system, cannot be changed for another such as if one wants the google search.

Microsoft intends to amortize and obtain profit from this operating system through advertising, the sale of mobile apps through its Windows store (Windows Store) and through cloud services, hence it requires an account connected to Microsoft by logging into Microsoft servers. Although there is the option of creating a local account, the system will constantly suggest and indicate that we create an account or log in to Microsoft’s servers. In fact, many functions don’t work if you don’t sign in with a Microsoft account. The whole system is developed based on the apps, the store, the cloud services and the advertising. In fact, the Windows 10 programming libraries include libraries to program the inclusion of advertising in the system and obtain benefits for it.

Right to share all the information

It should also be noted that Microsoft is constantly monitoring all our activity in the system, such as our searches, our location, etc. In order to be able to offer advertising and services in accordance with the uses we make of the operating system and reserves the right to share all the information that it collects about us with other collaborating companies. Even if all these tracking options are disabled by Microsoft in the settings, the system continues to send information to Microsoft that clearly identifies our account or our team even if we only have a local account created.

Windows 10 includes many mobile and tablet apps installed by default, even some of them with advertising included, something unacceptable in a paid operating system, and none of these apps can be uninstalled. Although the option to uninstall these apps appears, when uninstalling them it is limited to deleting the direct access to the app and every time we install an update, or create a new account, we observe that these apps that we had supposedly uninstalled reappear. In addition, all these apps are very limited, simple, unstable and quite lacking in functionality.

It is striking that an operating system from the year 2015, its default email application is a simple and crappy app with less functionality, features and connectivity than the email application for Windows 95, Microsoft Mail and News from 1996. The new Windows 10 calculator is the same as that of a Windows Mobile 10 phone. In fact, it is exactly the same application and the same code as in all apps. Hence, it makes no sense to install or buy a computer to use Windows 10, since with a phone or tablet under $ 300 with Windows 10 you get basically the same thing.

Windows 10 is much faster than in previous versions

Although the start-up of Windows 10 is much faster than in previous versions, the general operation of the system is much slower because practically the entire system is developed for mobiles and tablets and works with mobile apps. In fact, the performance tests performed based on processor loads, memory access and storage unit readings are much slower compared to Windows 7. Even with games we get lower performance and frames per second (FPS) than with Windows 7.

Also noteworthy is the poor quality of software development by Microsoft since 2010. This whole system in general has many parts that are incomplete or half developed and other parts or features that do not work directly. For example you cannot create a wireless network point as in Windows 7 or you have deleted previous versions of files.

Windows 10 January Update Details – Big Update Hopefully good

As you know, the next public preview build of Windows 10 with the number 9926 did not receive a new name of its own, although many assumed that it would be a Consumer Preview. Meanwhile, it was presented with a certain fanfare, which is reflected in previous publications on our website, and undoubtedly deserves a separate review, even though it remains crude and incomplete.

Illustration of release after Windows 10

But first, it should be noted that the development process of Windows 10 is continuous, is determined by the modern concept of “quick” releases and, apparently, will be extended to the final version of the OS. An illustration of this is the release after Windows 10 Technical Preview (9841) of two more public assemblies with numbers 9860 and 9878, each of which brought its own changes.

The first was distributed through Windows Update but it was in it that the mechanism for updating assemblies was improved. Looking ahead a bit, this is what it looks like today:

As you can see, there are fast and slow channels, in the last of them the assemblies arrive after some running-in. So far, we are talking about preliminary versions, but it is possible that in some form this mechanism will remain in the final one – enterprises rarely chase after IT innovations, so “quick” releases are unlikely to be received with enthusiasm. Or there will be some kind of containment in Windows Update.

Windows 10

Windows 10 – smartphones , tablets and PCs.

In the same assembly, the notification center was launched for the first time, and also new sections of the Data Sense and Battery Saver system settings appeared, similar to those in Windows Phone – as promised, Microsoft is building an end-to-end Windows 10 platform that should look and behave as much as possible on smartphones , tablets and PCs.

Build 9878 was already distributed through the mentioned channels – at first through the fast one, after a while through the slow one. It now supports MKV, three-finger gestures on touchpads, Snap Assist on multiple monitors, as well as the ability to remove the Search and Task View buttons from the taskbar and some other little things.

Two novelties, however, are quite significant. First, there are floating dialog boxes in Metro apps. Now additional requests and messages.

The change is completely logical, since the tape across the entire screen in desktop mode certainly looks nonsense. One could argue: are Metro apps really needed on the desktop? Apparently, they may and will be needed – details below.

Second, the OneDrive client has changed dramatically. Full synchronization of storage, as in Windows 8.1, with the ability to store not only files, but also special shortcuts (with an explicit indication of local and online availability), was again replaced by selective, in which the synchronized files are completely copied, and the shortcuts disappeared as such:

Microsoft Growing popularly online

Microsoft explains this change by the fact that with the current pace of development and growing popularity of online storage, even some shortcuts can take up an unacceptable amount of space (especially on budget devices with small drives, the size of which can be as little as 16 GB ), so let the user choose what it needs it locally and what it doesn’t.

This decision looks controversial, although Microsoft has tried to mitigate the effect somewhat at the expense of other features. Perhaps it would be worth keeping both principles, and the choice between them would be made by the user or even automatically, depending on the size of the local storage. However, it is worth getting to know OneDrive in more detail, so let’s move on to Build 9926 itself.

Consumer gizmos

Home users in general are an important audience for Microsoft, and even more so in the context of promoting Windows to tablets. It is with this aspect that the expectations of the Consumer Preview were connected. However, Build 9926 gives us some insight.

Formally, Xbox is a regular Metro application, but it will be bundled for the OS, like Mail and others. In addition, a whole ecosystem develops behind the application itself, in fact, a separate social network. You can read more in our special material .

Windows 10 developers

Not much can be said about the application itself. At the first launch, the developers warn that it is in a phase of active development and will be regularly updated. At the moment, here you can make friends, share achievements in games and write messages.

Perhaps the most interesting part of it so far is the opportunity to watch the search for the right design of Metro-applications, equally suitable for window and full-screen modes. So, for example, the Xbox has a separate Settings button (in the lower left corner), and the settings themselves are displayed in the main window.

At the same time, the standard call to Settings is carried out through the control menu, which is hidden under the button in the left corner of the title bar (there used to be three dots, now there are three dashes, which are sometimes called “sandwich”). The settings are visualized in a special panel, which now fits into the application window, and was previously drawn from the right edge of the screen.

Moreover, this is accompanied by rather strange visual effects: the panel jumps out from behind the nearest (that is, not necessarily the right) edge of the screen and disappears, respectively, in the opposite direction. Sometimes, when a group of parameters is selected, the main panel is replaced in the same way with a “nested” one.

If you exclude special effects, then a uniform placement of settings in a standard place within the application window seems to be the right decision. However, as you can see, the creative search continues at Microsoft. In addition to the Xbox, the current build also has a new type of applications.

Change folder icon in windows 10 for Cool Appearance

In the Windows 10 operating system, the icons of almost all folders are the same, and you can partially change their appearance only by changing the themes. In general, this is enough for most users, but there are those who prefer to customize the system interface in more detail, including changing the icons of certain (or all) directories. Let’s see how this can be done in the top ten. First you need to find and download the desired icon (set of icons), which we want to replace the standard one (file format – “ico”). For example, search engines on the Internet can help us with this.

windows 10 new icons

After we have found what we were looking for, we do the following:

  1. Right-click on the folder whose icon we want to change. In the context menu that opens, select the “Properties” item. Go to folder properties in Windows ten
  2. In the properties that appear, go to the “Settings” tab, where we click on the “Change icon” button. Change folder icon in Windows Ten
  3. We can select an icon from the proposed library (SHELL32.dll) or by clicking the “Browse” button, go to the selection of the previously downloaded icon. In our case, we choose the last option. Selecting an icon for a folder in Windows Ten
  4. A window will open in which you need to go to the folder in which the desired icon is stored. After selecting it, click “Open”. Selecting an icon for a folder in Windows Ten
  5. You will be returned to the previous window, where we confirm the selection by pressing the OK button. Confirming folder icon change in Windows Ten
  6. And again click OK to exit the folder properties and save the changes. Confirming changes made to folder properties in Windows Ten
  7. The folder icon should change to the selected one. In some cases, you may need to press the F5 key to refresh the state of Explorer. Folder with changed icon in Windows 10

Note: To restore the default icon, in the selection window, click on the “Restore default values” button.

In addition to downloading ready-made icons, users have the ability to create their own, for example, through the IcoFX app. Read more about this in the 4th section of our article – “How to change icons on the Windows Ten desktop”.

Change the icons of all folders

The easiest and safest way is to make changes through the Registry Editor. You can also edit the resources of the SHELL32.dll system library, however, this is a more complicated and risky method, so we will not consider it.

Note: before making any changes to the system registry, we recommend that you create a restore point to which you can roll back the system in case of possible problems.

So, the algorithm of actions is as follows:

Press the key combination Win + R. In the “Run” window that opens, type the command “regedit” and press Enter (or OK).Launching Registry Editor through the Run window in Windows 10

In the Editor window, follow the path:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ExplorerExplorer folder in

As a result, the content of the section looks as follows. String parameters in Windows Ten Registry Editor

Launch the Task Manager. This can be done, for example, through the Search line. Launching Task Manager via the Search bar in Windows Ten

Right-click on the “Explorer” line and select the “Restart” command in the menu that opens. Restarting File Explorer in Windows 10 Task Manager

Note: With the selected icon, the catalogues will be shown only if they are displayed as small icons, a list or a table.

  • Changed folder icons in Windows Ten Explorer
  • In other cases – only if the folder is empty.
  • Tile view mode in Windows Ten Explorer
  • To fix this, in any open folder in Explorer, go to the “View” tab, where we click on the “Options” button.

But we can manually select the desired image:

  1. Create or download a picture, then go to the folder in which it is located. Switch to the “View” tab, in which we enable the display of file extensions. Enabling file extension display in Windows ten
  2. Right-click on the image file, in the menu that opens, select the “Rename” command (or by selecting the file, just press the F2 key ). Renaming a file via the context menu in Windows Ten
  3. Change the name and extension to “Folder.gif”, press Enter, and then confirm the change by pressing the “Yes” button. Confirming extension change when renaming a file in Windows 10
  4. Copy / move the file to the folder for which we want to set this image as a preview. Moving a file from one folder to another in Windows 10
  5. Now we see exactly our picture as a preview of the contents of the folder. Folder with content display in Windows 10

Alternative method

  • Go to the folder properties via the context menu. Go to folder properties in Windows 10
  • In the “Settings” tab, click the “Select file” button. Selecting a file as a folder image in Windows Ten
  • In the window that opens, specify the path to our image and click “Open”. Selecting a file as a folder image in Windows ten
  • We save the changes by clicking OK. Confirming changes to folder properties in Windows Ten.

Thus, users of the “dozens” have the opportunity to change the icon for a specific or for all folders using standard operating system tools, as well as select an image that will be shown as a preview of the content in certain display modes.

What services to disable in Windows 10 to utilize less resources

The question of disabling Windows 10 services and for which of them you can safely change the startup type are usually interested in in order to improve system performance. While this may indeed slightly speed up the performance of your computer or laptop, I do not recommend disabling services for those users who do not know how to independently solve the problems that could theoretically arise after this. Actually, I generally don’t recommend disabling Windows 10 system services.

windows 10
Below is a list of services that can be disabled in Windows 10, information on how to do this, as well as some explanations for individual items. Again, do this only if you know what you are doing. If in this way you just want to remove the “brakes” that are already in the system, then disabling services most likely will not work, it is better to pay attention to what is described in the instructions How to speed up Windows 10 , as well as to install the official drivers for your hardware. The first two sections of the guide describe how to manually disable Windows 10 services, and also contain a list of those that are safe to disable in most cases. The third section is about a free program that can automatically disable “unnecessary” services, and also return all settings to their default values if something goes wrong. And at the end of the video there is an instruction, which shows everything described above.

How to disable services in Windows 10

Let’s start by looking at how services are disabled. This can be done in several ways, of which the recommended one is to enter “Services” by pressing Win + R on the keyboard and enter services.msc or through the item in the control panel “Administrative Tools” – “Services” (the second way is to enter msconfig on the “Services “). As a result, a window is launched with a list of Windows 10 services, their status and startup type. By double-clicking on any of them, you can stop or start the service, as well as change the startup type. Startup types are: Automatic (and deferred option) – starting the service when you log on to Windows 10, manually – starting the service at the moment when it was needed by the OS or some program, disabled – the service cannot be started.

In addition, I note that the service settings affect all Windows 10 users. The default settings themselves are located in the registry branch HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SYSTEM \ CurrentControlSet \ services \ – you can pre-export this section using the registry editor to be able to quickly restore the values by default. Better yet, create a Windows 10 restore point first , in which case you can use it from Safe Mode.
And one more note: you can not only disable some of the services, but also remove them by removing the Windows 10 components you do not need. You can do this through the control panel (you can enter it through the right click on start) – programs and components – enable or disable Windows components.

Windows 10 Easy Service Optimizer shutdown software

And now about the free program for optimizing the start-up parameters of Windows 10 services – Easy Service Optimizer, which allows you to easily disable unused OS services according to three pre-installed scenarios: Safe, Optimal and Extreme. Attention: I highly recommend creating a restore point before using the program.

I can’t vouch, but perhaps using such a program for a novice user will be a safer option than manually disabling services (or even better for a beginner not to touch anything in the service settings), since it makes returning to the original settings easier.

The Easy Service Optimizer interface is in Russian (if it has not turned on automatically, go to Options – Languages) and the program does not require installation. After starting, you will see a list of services, their current state and startup parameters.

At the bottom there are four buttons that allow you to enable the default state of services, a safe option for disabling services, optimal and extreme. The planned changes are immediately displayed in the window, and by clicking the upper left icon (or by choosing “File” – “Apply settings” in the menu), the parameters are applied.

By double-clicking on any of the services, you can see its name, startup type and safe startup values that will be applied by the program when choosing its various settings. Among other things, through the context menu by right-clicking on any service, you can delete it (I do not recommend it).
